One Friday afternoon, two volunteers from the Project Management Institute (PMI) visited the basis school Emmaus in Voorschoten to run a fun and hands-on workshop for Groups 7 and 8 kids. The goal? To introduce them to project management in a way they’d never forget.

After gym class, the kids returned to find boxes of marshmallows being unpacked. Excited for a treat, they were surprised when Ralf, the workshop facilitator, said with a grin, “No! You have to earn them first.” And so, the adventure began. Ralf explained what project management is and how it helps in everyday life, like planning school projects or working in teams. Then came the challenge: build the tallest, most stable tower using spaghetti and marshmallows. It wasn’t about creating famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower but about teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity.

The room buzzed with excitement as teams brainstormed, assigned roles, and got to work. After 15 minutes, the towers were complete, and each team proudly presented their creation. The winners earned marshmallows, but every kid walked away with valuable lessons in planning and collaboration.

The workshop was made possible with the support of Suzanne Booms, Group 7 and 8 teacher at Emmaus School. By the end, one kid asked: "Can we play again? I know how to build a taller tower next time!" Learning the lessons and choosing the strategies to build your own towers is a good life lesson these kids got today. Moderators Maria and Ralf were thrilled to see the kids so engaged. Who knows? Maybe some of them will be project managers one day!
