Meet our board member: Hikmet
What motivated you to join/continue being part of the PMI NL Board?
Before moving to the Netherlands, I had always taken roles in different NGO’s. For example, I was an active member of the Linux Users Group in Turkey. When I became a PMP in 2018, I learned about the PMI Netherlands Chapter and its volunteer opportunities. Motivated by event networking, I joined the events team, though we had to switch to online events a year later when COVID broke out.
I have a background in IT, and when an opening for an Operations and Technology role came up, I moved into it, which better matches my background. It is a wonderful community: smart people, valuable connections, and I enjoy every single event that I attend.
What is your role on the board, and what are you most excited to work on?
I am the Technology and Operations Director and a member of the board. My responsibilities mainly involve preparing everything for other board members and volunteers to perform their tasks: e-mail communications, website updates, event activities, administration of collaboration tools, etc. I like the newsletter preparation most. I don’t prepare the content, but I convert it into the email you receive, and that gives me a feeling of 1-1 communication with the recipients.
What professional or personal experience do you bring to the board?
I try to make things easier for board members, volunteers, and Chapter members - mainly in terms of technology. In addition, after almost 7 years of membership, I learned a lot about the procedures, etc. So, this experience helps me connect people and solve problems from time to time.
What do you hope PMI NL members gain most from the community?
Positive feeling about being part of the community, which I consider paramount. Also, networking, events, and webinars for learning from others' experiences.
A fun or human touch: something about you people might not know.
I am a PMP, but I do not work as a project manager. If anybody wants to learn the story of me becoming a PMP and not performing it as a profession, I would be happy to meet you in person at any event and share my story.
25 years from now...
Well, I'll probably be retired. Project management will evolve for sure; however, I believe the PMI organization will be there to help and guide project managers of the future.
Newsletter Editor’s Note: Each board member brings a unique story and perspective. Stay tuned for the next edition, where we’ll spotlight another leader shaping the future of PMI Netherlands.
