News

Newsletter Editor’s Note: Preparing for a certification can feel both exciting and overwhelming - and who better to learn from than colleagues who have just gone through the process? In this new Q&A series, we highlight recently certified team members who share their personal journeys, study approaches, challenges, and tips for success. Their real-world experiences aim to inspire and support anyone preparing for their next exam, offering practical insights and honest reflections from those who’ve been right where you are. At the end of each feature, you’ll also find a short author bio to help you get to know the voices behind the stories.

What motivated you to pursue your PMP certification?

I received the opportunity to step into a Project Manager role for a client I was already working with. I was immediately excited, as I had aspired to take on this role for quite some time. I developed from leading a few smaller projects to managing a full program, and eventually felt the need for a strong knowledge backbone to further support and develop my project management skills.

What did your preparation process look like? / Which study materials or resources did you find most helpful?

The PMP prep course of TIA Exams was very helpful in building my understanding of the fundamentals. After that, I read the PMBOK and the Agile Practice Guide. I found the PMI Study Hall exam simulator a very valuable resource, as they really challenged my knowledge and helped me build exam stamina.

Do you have one or two tips for others preparing for the exam?

Build a deep understanding of the concepts so you know how to apply them in different scenarios. Don’t aim to memorize, aim to master.

How has the certification impacted your career or day-to-day work so far?

I shared my achievement with my colleagues and my client. I noticed that people started to value my perspective and project expertise more— whether consciously or not. It has strengthened both my confidence and my professional credibility.

What was the most challenging part for you, and how did you overcome it?

I went through a very busy period in my personal and professional life, which made it difficult to consistently find time to study. By creating a clear study plan, blocking focused time, and receiving strong support from my company and family, I was able to stay on track and maintain my motivation.

Who or what helped keep you motivated throughout your journey?

My ambition to become a strong Project Manager has been there since my bachelor’s degree. I was also motivated by seeing how I could apply the PMBOK principles directly in my work and help my client improve project outcomes. Seeing the real-world impact kept me moving forward.

What would you say to someone unsure whether they should start this journey?

PMP is a mindset and a toolkit you’ll use throughout your career. If you feel even a small spark of interest, it’s worth pursuing. It will strengthen how you think, lead, and solve problems, and open the door to new opportunities.
