Sustainability in Project Management: From Topic to a Dedicated Team

News
Important Notice

Sustainability is no longer a “nice to have” in project management,  it is becoming a core competence. Across industries, project professionals are increasingly expected to deliver not only on time, scope, and budget, but also with a clear understanding of long-term environmental, social, and economic impact.

Over the past months, we have seen a growing interest in sustainability among PMI Netherlands members. More questions are being asked:

  • How can projects contribute to sustainable value creation?
  • How do we integrate ESG principles into project decisions?
  • What does sustainability mean in daily project practice, beyond theory?

This rising engagement made one thing clear: sustainability deserves focused attention.

Why a dedicated Sustainability Team?

Projects shape the future,  they create products, services, infrastructure, and change. As project managers, we are in a unique position to influence how responsibly that future is built.

By establishing a dedicated Sustainability Team, PMI Netherlands aims to:

  • Create a space for members to learn, exchange, and experiment
  • Translate sustainability concepts into practical project management tools
  • Share best practices, case studies, and lessons learned
  • Connect sustainability with PMI standards, certifications, and professional development.

The team’s focus is on making sustainability practical, relevant, and actionable for project professionals,  regardless of sector or seniority.

What sustainability means for project professionals?

Sustainability in project management goes beyond environmental impact alone. It also includes:

  • Social responsibility: inclusion, ethics, and stakeholder well-being
  • Economic sustainability: long-term value creation and resilience
  • Governance and transparency: informed decision-making and accountability
  • Embedding these perspectives into projects strengthens outcomes not only for organisations, but for society as a whole.

We are looking ahead and inviting you to get involved

The Sustainability Team will contribute through knowledge-sharing sessions, discussions, and collaboration with other PMI initiatives and communities. Its goal is to help project professionals turn sustainability principles into everyday practice.

If sustainability resonates with you,  whether as a passion, a professional challenge, or a learning journey,  we warmly invite you to join or support the Sustainability Team. Your experience, curiosity, or fresh perspective can make a real difference.

Together, we can ensure that the projects we lead today create value that truly lasts tomorrow. Contact us on socialgood@pmi-nl.nl
