The review: THE AGE OF SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM
THE AGE OF SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM - The fight for a human future at the new frontier of power
Shoshana Zuboff
The book of this month is a must-read for everyone using the internet, online applications, or even connected electronic devices. The book of this month is a must-read for every adult. "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism"
Shoshana Zuboff presents a comprehensive view of the new type of capitalism boosted by dot-com companies.
In opposition to industrial capitalism, which profits from natural resources and labor, surveillance capitalism benefits from data to render reality, predict our behavior, and ultimately direct it.
The book describes how companies are instrumentalizing users as a source of data for internal analytics and programming. The enormous amount of information accumulated gives them a dominant position, leading to an oppressive capitalism not seen before.
Zuboff gives the impression that the course of action is almost unavoidable because artifacts like cookies or IoT are already deeply rooted in our lives. I miss the call to rebellion against a model that relies on eliminating people's free will or even supplanting them with AI.
I am sure that after reading the book, you will be more cautious about accepting cookies, sharing your location, or granting access to your camera or microphone.
Please enjoy it!
