Two Reads to Prepare for the PMI BeNeLux Summit

News
Events

With the PMI BENELUX Summit around the corner, many of us are already looking ahead - not just to the conversations we’ll have, but to the shifts taking shape in how we manage projects. Generative AI will no doubt be part of those discussions, whether you’re curious, cautious, or already experimenting.

To help frame the topic, these two recent PMI reports offer timely insights: one explores how early adopters are already using GenAI across project work, and the other offers a hands-on introduction to writing better prompts and getting more value from AI tools. They don’t promise silver bullets, but they do offer something more useful: clear examples, grounded advice, and a sense of where things are heading.

Report: First Movers’ Advantage: The Immediate Benefits of Adopting Generative AI For Project Management

The PMI report "First Movers’ Advantage: The Immediate Benefits of Adopting Generative AI for Project Management" presents a compelling case for early adoption of GenAI in project management.

Drawing insights from a global survey of 500 professionals and expert interviews, the report identifies four adoption groups - Trailblazers, Innovators, Adapters, and Explorers - based on the extent of GenAI use in project work.

Trailblazers, who apply GenAI in over half of their projects, report significantly better outcomes in productivity, problem-solving, cost control, and creativity. They not only experiment across a broader range of tasks but also apply GenAI at a deeper, more complex level, especially for planning, data analysis, risk management, and decision-making. These professionals also excel in prompt engineering and advocate for organizational transformation, creating a reinforcing cycle of skill growth and technology adoption.

The report emphasizes that individual proficiency alone isn't enough. Organizational enablement is key. High adoption rates are strongly linked to organizations with strategic GenAI policies, governance structures, and executive support.

“Peak” organizations create environments where GenAI is promoted and used at scale, while “Foundational” organizations rely on individual experimentation, risking fragmented implementation and missed potential. The report outlines barriers such as ethical concerns, data quality, and lack of training, and urges leaders to create safe experimentation environments, promote continuous learning, and equip teams with both technical and power skills.

Ultimately, GenAI is a catalyst for competitive advantage, and those who move early - both professionals and organizations - will shape the future of project management.

Report: Talking to the Machine: Prompt Engineering Essentials for Project Professionals

“Prompt Engineering for Project Professionals: Unlocking the Power of GenAI” serves as a practical guide to help project professionals harness Generative AI effectively through the art and science of prompt engineering.

The report outlines how prompt quality directly impacts AI output, emphasizing that well-structured prompts - those that provide context, specify format, clarify audience, and use role-playing or examples - lead to more accurate and actionable results. It introduces a prompt engineering framework tailored to the project management lifecycle, encouraging iterative refinement and thoughtful experimentation to enhance AI’s value across tasks like planning, risk analysis, communication, and reporting.

A central theme is empowering professionals with the skills to become AI copilots. The report demystifies different prompt types, such as instructive, interrogative, contextual, comparative, and simulative, and maps them to practical use cases. For example, project managers can use interrogative prompts to explore dependencies or contextual prompts to tailor communications for stakeholders.

The report also cautions against prompt traps like vagueness, hallucinations, or assuming AI knows your internal systems. By mastering prompt structure and becoming fluent in AI interaction, professionals can significantly boost productivity, creativity, and decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
