Voices of Our Partners: Implementing PMI in Infrastructure (& Construction) Sector of The Netherlands
In the past decades, PMI Philosophy and principals have been widely employed in various sectors and although traces of such principals can also be found in construction and mainly Infrastructure sector of The Netherlands, PMI has yet to receive a full recognition for its useful principals and added value in the country’s infrastructure sector (Oil, Gas and Marine excluded).
Coming from more than 20 years of experience in different organizational layers of construction (buildings) and Infrastructure, one thing is certain: "projects are becoming more complex, and unambiguity is increasing as we go on". Are we building prototypes of things for the first time? Certainly not; are we building with many different materials? Also, are we not building new products, or are we building new ones? That also is not the case. So what has changed? And what can we, as managers and leaders, do to stay in control and deliver the right value and results we are expected to?
Let's start with the cause part of the matter. It comes, once again, down to resources and in its basic form of Time, Quality, and Money! Not falling into the discussion of safety and other additives which need to fall under one of the aforementioned main items. To stay within the constraints of this article, only time will be briefly discussed to leave room to delve into quality, money, and the effects and solutions in the upcoming articles.
Complexity caused by time
Here, we talk about 4 phases: Tender, Preparation, Construction, and Handover.
- Tenders and winning times are becoming more intense.
- Preparation; with increasing amount of general and client inhouse requirements and global supply schedule, receives less and less available time.
- Construction time are insanely cut short and to limited hours based on activity and regulations.
- Handovers, a process which needs to start rooting from inception phases, is due to all aforementioned and other reasons started either late or incomplete.
