AI under the hood

Power Skills

Artificial intelligence is becoming an everyday companion for project managers—but to use it responsibly and effectively, it is no longer enough to know what AI can do. To refine our practice, we must also understand how it works, where it excels, and where its limits truly lie.

This fourth session of the webinar series takes a step back from use cases and applications to explore AI “under the hood.” By demystifying the inner workings behind modern AI systems, project managers can develop stronger judgment, ask better questions, and avoid common misconceptions that lead to over-trust or misuse.

This session is the fourth workshop in a 10-part series exploring how AI can support and transform project management. After learning how to prompt AI and apply it in practice, we now zoom out to examine the foundations of AI technology itself—how different AI approaches work, how they learn, and why they behave the way they do.

In this session, you will explore:

  • The AI continuum: from programmatic AI based on expert rules to machine learning systems
  • How machine learning evolves into deep learning, and why it requires vast amounts of data
  • How image recognition systems are trained and how they interpret/produce visual data
  • Function-based models and how it’s possible to combine neural networks with search engines
  • Mixture-of-experts architectures and how to always get to talk to an expert
  • Chain-of-thought models and how models start to mimic cognition
  • Why many AI “fixes” are only Band-Aids, and what that means for reliability and risk

You will leave with:

  • A clearer mental model of how modern AI systems actually function
  • A deeper understanding of AI strengths, limitations, and failure modes
  • The ability to use AI more critically, responsibly, and effectively in project environments

Whether you are a regular AI user or simply curious about what happens behind the interface, this session will help you move beyond black-box thinking. By understanding AI at a fundamental level, you will be better equipped to harness its value—while maintaining professional judgment, accountability, and trust.

Throughout the series, participants progressively develop key capabilities—from structuring AI workflows and mastering prompts to understanding risks, fine-tuning models, building AI agents, and anticipating the future of work.
