Research Awards

The Dutch Project Management Research Awards are jointly organised by PMI Netherlands Chapter and IPMA Netherlands. The awards recognise outstanding Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in the fields of project, programme and portfolio management.

The awards were created to strengthen project management research in the Netherlands and to connect academic knowledge with professional practice. By giving visibility to high-quality student research, the awards help bring new insights, innovative ideas and practical recommendations to the project management community.

The awards are open to students whose thesis contributes to the development of project management as a discipline or profession. This may include research on project delivery, programme management, portfolio management, leadership, governance, stakeholder engagement, sustainability, digital transformation, risk management, or other related topics.

Why participate?

Participating in the Dutch Project Management Research Awards gives students the opportunity to share their research with a professional audience of academics, students, business leaders and experienced project professionals.

Nominees gain visibility within the project management field, receive recognition for their academic work and have the opportunity to discuss the practical relevance of their findings with professionals from the PMI and IPMA networks.

For universities and supervisors, the awards provide a platform to showcase relevant student research and strengthen the connection between academia and practice.

Ike Nwankwo MSc, MBA, PMP -  Chair, PMI Global Board of Directors

“I was thrilled to attend the recent CAPM Graduation and Research Awards event at TU Delft. This event was a heartfelt reminder of why PMI exists, to help young, aspiring project professionals maximise success and elevate the world. It was incredible to witness these dedicated graduates share their innovative research and fresh perspectives. The evening’s poster presentations were a highlight that not only showcased the graduates’ expertise and passion, but also how they can light the way for future CAPM graduates by sharing their knowledge with others. A sincere thank you to TU Delft and everyone who made this event possible.”

The procedure

PMI Netherlands Chapter and IPMA Netherlands jointly organise the Dutch Project Management Research Awards on an annual basis. Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in the fields of project, programme or portfolio management are reviewed by a professional jury consisting of academics and experienced project managers from practice. The thesis may be written in either Dutch or English.

Each submission must be accompanied by a short supporting letter from the thesis supervisor, mentor or academic supervisor. This letter should explain why the thesis deserves to be nominated and should be no longer than one A4 page.

The submissions are assessed based on:

  • the innovative contribution to the field of project management;
  • the potential to improve project management practice;
  • the practical applicability of the findings;
  • the quality and relevance of the research.

Based on the submitted theses, the jury selects a shortlist of nominees. Shortlisted candidates are invited to participate in activities that give visibility to their research, their personal profile and the award event.

During the award event, nominees present their research to an audience of academics, students, business professionals and project management practitioners. The format may vary per edition, but the focus is always on interaction, discussion and the exchange of insights between research and practice. The event concludes with the award ceremony, where awards are presented in several categories, including Gold, Silver, Bronze and the Audience Choice Award.
