PM Skill Builder - Assess Your Skills
Hard Skills are critical for any project manager, but Soft Skills are key to long-term success. This was underscored with data from the recent "Inspiration from the Top" Event in December. Marloes Roelands took us through 3 key ideas:
- High Performing Companies are looking for employees that build their skills
- Continuous learning and career advancement are linked
- Skills are the 'golden thread' throughout an Employees life cycle
2 Types of Skills
Hard Skills focus on the knowledge we gain through certification, education, and training. Often called technical skills, these abilities are required for most professional positions.
Lifelong learning is required to ensure these skills stay marketable.
Soft Skills, sometimes called interpersonal or social skills, are required to successfully create, produce, and work with others. Since teamwork and interpersonal skills are core to project work, taking time to self-assess these skills is critical to improving your market relevance. PMI research and article summarizes the importance of these skills in this article.
Are you assessing your skills regularly and addressing gaps? Are you coaching team members to help them self-assess and build the skills needed to succeed on today's projects and get ready for their future challenges?
Start with Assessment
The process starts with assessment. We have a free downloadable for all members to access via the PMI website. Use this document to assess yourself, personalize the skill weighting based on your situation, and review the summary to help you review your skills and decide which ones you will work to improve in 2022.
